Shining Light takes on New York City! The 70 members and staff of Shining Light recently traveled to New York City for 2 days of ministry on Rikers Island, New York City’s jail and the largest penal colony in the world. During ministry presentations in 2 facilities on the island, Shining Light saw about 400 of the 14,000 average daily inmate population.
After each presentation the group had audience interaction time with the inmates and staff. Warden Edmund Duffy also met with the group and shared about his how his Christian faith has influenced his rise to warden and his responsibilities as warden. He also noted that Shining Light is the largest production that does ministry there. This was the group’s 6th visit to Rikers.
During this trip, the ensemble spent 2 nights at the New York School of Urban Ministry in Queens, participating in their Saturday night outreach to the homeless on the streets of New York City. Groups from Shining Light took food, blankets, and Bibles to homeless people in the Penn Station area and Upper East Side. On Sunday morning Shining Light also attended the Redeemer Presbyterian Church “classical” service in Manhattan. Best-selling author Timothy Keller is the Founding & Senior Pastor at Redeemer.

Coming up: Performance at Glen Mills School & the New Year's Eve Nexus.
On Sunday, the new nexus season kicked off with the Groovy 60s nexus! More than 50 attended, enjoying the usual nexus games with a 60s slant (including Beatles Rock Band), and some classic board games. In the middle of the evening, Kelly led her Groovy Games, which many participated in. Great start to the nexus season, with nexus' Got Talent coming up next at the end of November!
This past Sunday, October 23, Shining Light performed their second presentation at the Northwestern Academy Boot Camp, for about 75 young men. After a solid second presentation, the group had their first talk time of the season, sharing about the Shining Light with the Boot Camp, and learning more about some of their experiences, first, then speaking with a Drill Sergeant and staff member in the Community Partnership Program, who also had a few young men in the audience. Both staff members shared more about life in the facility, and about their personal backgrounds. It was a good opportunity for the new members of the group to hear about experiences in these unique places!

Coming up in the next few weeks, Shining Light has their first nexus, with a special 60s Theme Night next Sunday from 5-8:30! The following weekend is the Chicken BBQ Saturday morning, followed by the final rehearsal Sunday night to get ready for New York City, which happens November 11-13.
