This three-part video series, taught by a theater professor, introduces the foundations of theater including dialogue, conflict, theme, and literary tools to enhance any writing. With easy to follow steps, students come away from this lab with a greater sense of imagination, empathy, and the confidence to continue to explore their creativity!

Support materials include a video guide to help students follow along and understand their assignments. For students who want to go deeper in their understanding of dramatic structure and play formatting, an extension booklet provides additional reflective and written exercises as well as essential resources to take the next steps in playwriting. All videos available with subtitles in English and Spanish.

This 4-part “Masterclass” style video series introduces the art of spoken word in a format that invites self-appraisal, courageous exploration, and the power of sharing story. In each 20-30 minute video, viewers join a genuine “poets’ circle” as a professional poet/teaching artist leads 3 other spoken word artists through instruction and reflective discussion that correlates with writing assignments and creative prompts.

Samples of poetry written and performed by incarcerated participants from prior SL Workshops allow viewers to imagine their own success, while performances from the other poets in the “circle” are a practical and inspirational resource for viewers to further develop their writing and impact others with their story.
